Silver hair moss (Fabronia pusilla) COSEWIC assessment and status report: chapter 9

Special Significance of the Species

Fabronia pusillais relatively widespread in the southern portions of its range in North America, but becomes less common northward, and is rare in southern British Columbia. This distribution pattern, as well as its apparent preference for oak habitats in California, may indicate that our population is relictual in nature, possibly a remnant of a drier, oak-dominated ecosystem that was present in the southern portions of the province during the warmer hypsithermal period some six to seven thousand years ago.
