Athabasca thrift (Armeria maritima) COSEWIC assessment and status report: chapter 8

Biology

General

Seedlings of Armeria maritima subsp. interior become established both on gravel pavements and on moist to wet dune slacks (Raup & Argus 1982, Purdy 1995). Because of its cespitose growth form large, old plants are found only on the relatively stable gravel pavements. Plants growing in dune slacks are young, vigorous plants (Purdy 1995), but these plants, inasmuch as they lack the capacity to grow up through sand, eventually will be buried by moving dunes. Further research on the biology of this endemic is needed.
