Few small declining disjunct populations remain within a geographically restricted area. They are threatened by hybridization with an alien species, a blight disease, and habitat degradation.

Designated Threatened in April 1987. Status re-examined and uplisted to Endangered in April 1999. Status re-examined and confirmed Endangered in May 2000. May 2000 assessment based on new quantitative criteria applied to information from the existing April 1999 status report.
