Richard Knapton est biologiste de la faune pour Environnement Canada, chargé de cours en ornithologie et en biologie à la University of Alberta, et guide, propriétaire et directeur d’Eagle-Eye Tours Inc. Il détient un diplôme de premier cycle de la Lakehead University, une maîtrise de la University of British Columbia et un doctorat de la University of Manitoba, et a été récipiendaire d'une bourse postdoctorale de la University of Toronto. Chercheur sur le terrain depuis plus de 25 ans, monsieur Knapton a étudié des espèces aussi variées que la Grive de Bicknell, le Faucon émerillon, la Chevêche des terriers, le Cormoran à aigrettes, la Sturnelle des prés, le Bruant chanteur, le Bruant des plaines et le Bruant à gorge blanche. Il est l'auteur de plus de 70 articles sur la répartition, l'écologie et le comportement des oiseaux. monsieur Knapton contribue à de nombreuses initiatives de conservation, notamment au Comité sur la situation des espèces en péril au Canada (Sous-comité de spécialistes des oiseaux), au programme de rétablissement du Bruant de Henslow et aux programmes Oiseaux en péril et Zones importantes pour la conservation des oiseaux au Canada. Il fait actuellement partie des comités Birds Records et Atlas Records de l’Alberta.
